Display clicked HTML Tag Name using JQuery

In this tutorial we will see how to Display clicked HTML Tag Name using JQuery. The JQuery event.target Property is used with nodeName Property to display HTML tag name.

HTML Code

HTML Code is given below, This code contains H1 heading tag, H2 heading tag, Paragraph tag and anchor tag.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.5.1.min.js"></script>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Display clicked HTML Tag Name using JQuery</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Heading 1</h1>
<h2>Heading 2</h2>
<p>Paragraph</p>
<a>Link</a>
</body>
</html>

JQuery Code

JQuery Code is given below, In this code the JQuery event.target Property is used with HTML DOM nodeName Property.

JQuery event.target Property

The JQuery event.target Property returns the HTML DOM element which has triggered the event.

In our example, it will return the clicked HTML element.

nodeName Property

The HTML DOM nodeName Property returns the nodeName of a specific node. In our example it will return the name of html tag since our node is html element.

It can also return the attribute name if node is an attribute node. This HTML Dom Property is read only property.

When event.target is combined with nodeName (event.target.nodeName), it returns the name of html element that has triggered the event.

event.stopPropagation() is also used which stops the further propagation of the current event.

Take a look at the code given below.

<script>
$("*").click(function(event) {
event.stopPropagation();
alert(event.target.nodeName);
})
</script>
